Theme- to be loved

Throughout Jane Eyre, there is a recurring quest to be loved. From Jane's childhood, she is looking for someone's approval and affection. After she leaves her aunt's house without this love, Jane temporarily finds companionship at Lowood with Helen Burns. Jane confides in Helen that "If others don't love me, I would rather die than live- I cannot bear to be solitary and hated, Helen" (69). At Lowood, Jane becomes close with Ms. Temple and Helen, but eventually both women leave her. Jane then leaves the school to seek a new vocation, but also for love that she missed from the departure of Helen and Ms. Temple. Once at Thornfield, Jane eventually gets Mr. Rochester's love. After that love appeared to expire, Jane again left her home in search for something greater. Jane finds God's love after leaving Rochester. Jane's whole life is in search for someone's love, whether she is conscious of it or not.

  1. I for one am very disappointed that Helen Burns died so early in the story.
